Automating the calculation and production of curved glass panels.

Curved Glass

Curved glass is a signature design element in yacht design. Producing irregular glass shapes requires moulds with heating pipes arranged in precise configurations to achieve the desired curvature. Traditionally, the CNC files for these moulds were created manually through a repetitive, multi step process.

A classic automation case

I automated this workflow by developing a Grasshopper script to generate the required geometry, reducing production time by 95%. The script ensures consistent design decisions and error free outputs, while incorporating the knowledge and practical experience of designers and production staff.

Using the 3D glass design as input, the script automatically orients the geometry, maps the heating pipes, and generates CNC files for the mould housing them. Adjustable parameters include file naming, offsets, and support slot positions.
